Everything but the Kitchen Sink

Last night's 2:00 AM feeding was quite eventful. I know that Adrien has kept you updated on all of Cole's diaper mishaps and middle of the night wakefulness-all of which have happened to Adrien; up till now, that is. Cole pulled out all the stops for me last night!

In my opinion Cole is a weird eater. He acts so hungry he can't stand it, but as soon as I start feeding him, he is out cold. Due to this "newborn eating style", we have come up with a system to insure Cole is eating enough. We start by feeding him until he falls asleep. Then comes a diaper change which wakes him up and reminds him he's hungry. He'll eat a little more and then conk out again. At this time I swaddle him back up and if he's still hungry he'll wake up once more to finish his meal.

Well, as I began the diaper changing phase of this particular feeding session, Cole released a fairly small bowel movement. Lucky for me, I am very good about putting the new, clean diaper under the one I am about to remove for instances just like this. (Let me also add at this point that I ALWAYS place a washcloth over his dinger so I will not get sprayed. ) So, the new diaper caught the bowel, no problem, except that he then released another one-a very large one. At this point, I lifted the washcloth just a tiny bit so I could see where the mess landed. I immediately felt a warm, wet sensation running down my hand. Apparently I moved enough of the washcloth to remind Cole to pee also! Now I had caught two bowel movements and urine within a 30 second time period. I guess Cole just wanted to even the score between his daddy and me. Once I got the diaper changed, and the mess under control, I looked down to see my son's two grey-blue eyes staring up at me! Wow, I thought to myself, am I going to be lucky enough to spend the next hour, in the middle of the night, with my son who thinks it's the middle of the day? Luckily, this awake period lasted all of 10 minutes, but I was quickly reminded of the hour his daddy had spent with him a few nights before. After all this, I thought there was nothing else that could happen to me. Everything Adrien had experienced over the past week took place during the 30 minutes I had spent with Cole. Funny thing is, Cole had one more up his sleeve. One that even Daddy hadn't experienced! As I was preparing to get up from the rocker to swaddle my little one, I noticed his belly button looked different. I could actually see his belly button! My next thought was, where is that nasty little piece of crust!? I quickly swept the floor with my eyes and as I looked back down at my son's belly, I saw his umbilical cord stump, laying on MY BELLY!! As Daddy has said previously, Cole wins.
