Sleep, Glorious Sleep!

Well, for some anyway. Let me start by saying that now that Cole has figured out rolling over, he has also accomplished something else incredibly exciting. Friday night I put Cole to bed (in his pack n play at Nana and Nandad's house) and I assumed I'd be seeing him around 3:00 AM. I was awake most of the night because I was a bit uncomfortable and was having a hard time sleeping. As I lay awake, I listened to the monitor next to me, realizing I hadn't heard any sounds up to that point. I fell back asleep and awoke at 6:00 AM. I jumped out of bed and ran to "Cole's room" only to find him sleeping on his stomach! Let me interject here that I have still been swaddling him, but with one arm out so he can suck his thumb if he needs to soothe himself. He had pulled his arm out at some point during the night and rolled over. This date marks the first official time Cole slept through the night! Cole has now slept through the night three nights in a row! I'm still having a hard time sleeping *, probably because I'm used to being awake sometime during the night and my body is also used to feeding Cole in the middle of the night! I just hope this continues long enough for me to enjoy an 8 hour night of full sleep!! :)

*I'm sure some of my lack of sleep is due to the fact I am uncomfortable with Cole sleeping on his tummy and I'm scared to death he'll stop breathing one night. I've decided that when I can't sleep because I'm nervous, it's OK for me to creep into his room to check on him.

  1. Katie, if it gives you any comfort (to sleep better), there are actually more babies than you realize who do sleep on their bellies even at Cole's age. In fact, Josh never slept on his back, even before he could roll over. He would fuss if he was on his back. Even today, I put him to bed on his back so I can kiss him one last time, rub his hair, tuck the blanket around him, etc. and sure enough, almost before I'm out the door he has turned over onto his belly. If Cole can turn over by himself, and I know you've been doing a lot of other things with him to help strengthen his neck muscles, then trust that by now, his neck muscles are strong enough and he's not going to just lay face down and suffocate himself. He'll know to turn his head to the side so he can breathe. If it does still scare you, if you're not sure about his neck muscles right now, do you have one of those wedges that babies sleep in so they don't roll over? You want to be able to enjoy the nights he does sleep through the night though so do what you have to do to get some good shut eye, too!
